31 for 21 Day 4: Just Like Any Other Boy

Do you want to know what I think is the most scary thing about getting a diagnosis of Down Syndrome for your child? Different.

Do you want to know why?

I used to be afraid to be different. I was afraid that people wouldn't like me. I was afraid to look different. I thought that things had to be a certain way, the way they were supposed to.

I thought that my first born was going to be just like any other baby...keep us up at night, drink from a bottle easily, sit up, crawl, and walk just like everyone else's babies would. I thought he/she would eat baby food, then puffs and pick things up off the floor and start feeding themselves food off of their tray.

I thought my life would be just like anyone else's would...

Right up until we were told Colin had Down Syndrome and then, we were different.

Today, different is ok because it's what makes Colin unique and special. Colin is different because he has 47 chromosomes instead of 46. He is different because it takes him a little bit longer to learn things. He is different because it is more challenging for him to do certain things. He is different because he has a unique personality that makes him who. he. is.

Do you want to know what I think now? Different is ok.

Be the one to stand out in a crowd. - Joel Osteen

This is a picture circulating on facebook right now and I just fell in love with it. Different is ok...

Yes, Colin is different BUT, he is just like any other little boy.

He LOVES soccer!! I love watching this video because he is so adorable and loves his sports just like his Daddy.
