By the time we hit spring break, we were all desperate for a break from the distance learning that we had been doing since mid March. We all felt exhausted and a bit burnt out so being outside and doing different activities was a nice change of pace. We found ways to be outside as much as possible, but that also took a bit of creativity at times as well. </div>

I think we will all agree that Easter 2020 didn't go as we expected it to go. I will preface this by saying that I am thankful that we were all healthy but not being with people we loved was really hard. We did, however, make the most of the day we had and despite the circumstances, still had a pretty great day. We started our day out with Easter baskets from the Easter Bunny and the first egg hunt in the house. </div>

The weekend that ended week 3 was welcomed with open arms. We were ready for the break in school work and spent a lot of time outside. We explored a new little location close to our house that was a little bit of a walk/scooter/bike ride from our house. I had to laugh to myself because with all of the time in the world, the kids still all complained the whole way there and then the whole way home. "When are we going to be there? How much longer? When will we be home? What's taking so long?"</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are so many things that I am struggling with lately with being quarantined but one of the things that I have been really grateful for is this ability to just play outside at home. This is something we never really did too often before because we were so busy and I have found a new appreciation for my home and little yard that I never really had before.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
When the start of the school week came, we were in a pretty good routine but also, ready for the upcoming break. I was feeling burnt out from trying to work/teach and help the kids and getting them motivated to get work done was becoming increasingly difficult. Colin's sleep patterns by this point were not great and he was getting up pretty often at night. This made the early afternoons difficult because he was really tired. I am guessing that part of this is due to anxiety and stress during the day about the unknown (meaning, he knows there is something going on but doesn't exactly understand) and also with the start of his allergies. Our school week was broken up into two parts; school and play. </div>

I can tell you that one of the things I miss THE most about this quarantine is people! We all miss our family and friends a lot. We've done/had some drive-bys and they have changed my day! Last week we had a nice surprise from friends who dropped off some fun items for Chris and I! </div>

In all of the fun, Colin has become more brave! He tackled another big hill on his scooter but isn't so good with the brake! He fell at the bottom and was really upset, but I was so happy with how fast he turned it around! I am so proud of him and how brave he has become! </div>

This was so much so that on Saturday, we all basically laid around on the couches all day long watching movies. We were finally shifting into our new normal and accepting that this was how things were going to be for the foreseeable future.<br />

That weekend also timed with what was supposed to be the kids' last talent show with their school and we were all excited because they were all going to be in it this year. The kids were disappointed because they knew it was going to be cancelled so we decided to "perform" anyway. Cody was not as into this version of the performance, but at my begging, he participated. They performed "Come Alive" from the Greatest Showman Soundtrack. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This year, Kailey was performing "Rainbow" by Kacey Musgraves in sign language with one of her best friends Kailyn. It seemed pretty fitting at this time that the girls were performing a song that had such a strong message at this point in all of our lives. We decided that the girls would still perform it together, at an appropriate social distance (we measured, it was 8 ft.) and so that weekend, we got them dressed, met up at Kailyn's house and had them perform it for us. This was especially emotional for me and Kailyn's mom because we were already in a period of transition as our kids' beloved elementary school is being repurposed into a preschool and our kids will be parting to different schools next year. These events were being seen as some of our "last" together with the school. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The girls have been close since before they went to Kindergarten together because of their brothers, Colin and Lucas, who were friends first. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
As week 3 started, the kids' school started to shift into "virtual" mode where they were having more interaction with their peers and teachers online. This was an instant mood booster for the kids as they were missing them all so much. </div>

We are so incredibly lucky to have teachers that have done everything possible to help Colin (and us) in this time period. They are being incredibly creative, they are reaching out to him (and us), and they are reminding him (and us) how much they care for his happiness and success. With things not always being easy, this alone has been instrumental in getting us through. This is also true for Kailey and Cody, but as you know, learning looks different for Colin and his teachers have helped us so much with this in this difficult time period. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
While social media is really good at showing the "best of", that is certainly not the case here and I hope I portray those moments too. We have our stuff together the best we can, but it is not fool proof and this time period is<i> so hard</i>. When we think things are going well, we are given a harsh dose of reality! We ALL have our moments of impatience, being emotional, angry, or just having a hard time but we all display that in different ways. </div>

One of the things that really gets us through is the ability to be outside in the sunshine and fresh air. While there are so many things that just scare me about this pandemic, I am also so incredibly grateful for this given time to be with my family and just PLAY. These moments are infrequent in our busy, hectic lives, but we are being given time and we are definitely taking advantage of that. </div>

By the time Friday got here at the end of the first week, I think we all were feeling all of the feels of being overwhelmed, worried, burnt out, stressed, etc. and it was hard getting through the day. It was warm and beautiful out so we decided to "call it a half day" and escape to the beach. We drove south to "our spot" and it was amazing how good the salt air was for our souls. It completely turned the whole day around and it felt so good to be in our most favorite happy place. </div>

This new way of life is challenging in itself, but what I think is the hardest part of all of this is managing our own feelings and worries but staying calm for the kids' sake. The first weekend felt like a relief but also hard at the same time because it was different. We're all used to a life on the go spent with family and friends that we love and knowing we<i> couldn't</i> go anywhere was really challenging for everyone. All in the same breath we can be appreciative of the extra given time we have to spend together but also, having a hard time with the things that we're missing. So, we did the best we could to have fun, relax, and just be together. I'm also so incredibly grateful for technology because we've had the opportunity to meet with friends, family, have the kids take karate classes and attend church all from our home. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
At the start of the next week, I worked at adjusting our schedule a bit to make it work better. We have to be more specific about having a schedule because that has always been the conditions that Colin works better under. While we are in a much different place now with him and his behavior, there are behaviors that Colin will exhibit when he doesn't know or understand what is happening. For example, Colin is the easiest in the morning on a typical school day because he follows the list so explicity; he is typically dressed (with shoes on), teeth brushed, bed made, etc. all before anyone else gets up. He doesn't even need the list anymore because he follows his routine. I knew that I needed to establish a routine for this time period because without it, he becomes obsessive with questions, he gets his "nervous" face, gets upset easily, and will act out in other ways. He is also the easiest to work with right now because he follows the list and routine, which provides him comfort. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The schedule is adjusted often, depending on the day, and also as we learn what works best and what doesn't. I felt much more confident at the start of the week because things were going pretty smoothly. As with anything though, it came to a screeching halt when we all had a challenging day on Wednesday. We have lots of things that keep us going; the PTA president has been doing spirit days, the kids had "children's time" with the pastor at church, virtual craft time with Nana, and then at dinner, the kids just laughing remembering some of the "best" moments of our time together so far (me and Colin falling in the mud in the trails in week 1). </div>

As news spread that it was going to become likely schools were going to close, I don't think we really understood what the implications of that were going to be. We tried to prepare the kids as much as was realistically possible, but as we reflect on the last week we realized that there really is not much you can do to prepare children for a major disruption in their lives. What makes this time period even more challenging is trying to deal with your own emotions as an adult out of fear of trying to protect your family but also, move on with working full time from home (both parents), now becoming teachers for your children, maintaining a household with a ramped up cleanliness policy, and trying to maintain as much normalcy as possible. I think Chris and I did the best we could, but it certainly has not been easy. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
On Day 1 of the remote learning plan, it was a little challenging because Chris was working from home and I had to go into work for my last day to prepare my own set of plans for my students. It was harder than I thought and when I walked into my classroom, I had this feeling of sadness for all of this unknown that was ahead of us. Our kids were starting their first day of remote learning, so some of it started before I got home and then we tried to tackle the rest in the afternoon. We had a schedule, but quickly realized that we needed to adjust the schedule to best fit everyone's needs. </div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We also tried to get outside as much as possible and that is the time of the day that really helps everyone to regroup.<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We also have found some great resources to help us get through. Colin absolutely loved listening to Dan Gutman read a book from his series "My Wacky School" and he read a few chapters each day stating with Monday. It was really great! </div>

<br />
Cody had his moments on the first day, so we tried to remember that learning can come through other avenues, including simple tasks such as building with magnets. However, he reached a point where he was just <i>done</i>.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Going into day 2, I knew we needed a better plan. I brought in extra tables from the garage to set up a specific area that they could work. I couldn't handle having the dining room table be such a mess and I thought it would be better to have a designated space. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I adjusted the schedule (but then realized it would need to be adjusted again) and set a plan that was visible for everyone for the day. We started our day with a walk with scooters to ease ourselves into get work done. (Yes, Colin DID fall in the video, but he was Ok!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We also decided to treat the day as if it were the "first day of school" to give it a positive spin and snapped some photos. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In some ways, day 2 was the hardest but I think that's because the kids were really starting to realize this was their new reality. Each child had a moment that made it more challenging to work with them and thankfully, it didn't all happen at the same time! We finished the day with a trip to Allaire State Park for a walk in the woods on the trails. It honestly was what we (me) needed to turn the day around. This was especially true when Colin slipped on some mud at the river side, slipped into the water waste deep, and couldn't get out. I tried to help but then slipped myself and both of us laughed as we ineffectively tried to get out. Eventually, Chris had to come with a stick to get Colin out so that I could eventually get myself up and out of the muddy area. As we got back to the car, Cody turned to me and said "this was the best day ever" and it took me off guard because my perspective was totally different. </div>

We adjusted the schedule so that there was more working during the day and more free time in the afternoon, which allowed us to take a trip to the Manasquan Bike Path so the kids could scooter around. In addition, the PTA at our kids' school helped to make the days more motivational and one of the days was crazy hair day! </div>

On Friday, we ended the week with a little bit of an emotional touch; Colin's elementary school celebrated World Down Syndrome Awareness day by Rockin' our Socks virtually! It was so touching to see all of the posts of people wearing their socks and honoring Colin in such an awesome way! We are so thankful for such a wonderful school community! </div>

Updating the blog tonight was on my mind because I was trying to think about what I was going to talk about. But then, Colin was getting ready to take a shower and I couldn't help but think about my chubby little boy (a picutre that I can't find, but was similar to this popped into my head) and I was once again surprised at how much his body is changing lately. This was 4....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-R-_dcy3EluU/Xapk8z45XnI/AAAAAAAATfM/spuEPrgX7MUBZkhq3UJjKqtqnbGV1QKaACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-R-_dcy3EluU/Xapk8z45XnI/AAAAAAAATfM/spuEPrgX7MUBZkhq3UJjKqtqnbGV1QKaACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/1.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
...and this is 10. (just don't pay attention to his facial expressions)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wfSxq7wFrDw/XappZs97mJI/AAAAAAAATfY/ItJKbna2NZwuLbP_U9rrGzfmGne6T5NRgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_4741.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wfSxq7wFrDw/XappZs97mJI/AAAAAAAATfY/ItJKbna2NZwuLbP_U9rrGzfmGne6T5NRgCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG_4741.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
What amazes me is how muscular his body is becoming. I think this is a product of all of the physical activities he is doing lately but also, how determined he is to do different things. I really think he is motivated by things he sees on TV (American Ninja Warrior) and by doing things he really WANTS to do.<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One of the things that is most ironic to me is the fact that when the first photo was taken, Colin was at a point in time that he was on his most restrictive diet. He was not that interested in trying other foods and he was mostly eating cottage cheese and strawberries for the majority of his meals. These days, he primarily eats cottage cheese and strawberries for breakfast and maybe lunch but he loves eating all different things for dinner. We actually don't need to worry too much about making something different for him because he will eat any meat (it's the sides that are the issue) and any pasta dish. His favorite meal now is a taco dish I make that he calls "taco shells"; taco meat, shell noodles, and cheese. He will take a lot of leftovers in for lunch the next day so his lunch is pretty hearty as well. What's the most exciting is the fact that he WANTS to try different things. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am thankful for how much Colin continues to grow and change but also, I feel a little sad missing that little boy! </div>

A common characteristic among children with Down Sydrome is Brushfield spots. If you look closely at Colin's eyes in this picture, they are the white speckled spots that surround the iris of his eye. When you look up the definition, it basically says that it is an aggregation of connective tissue which is commonly found in the iris. Basically, it means nothing other than adding a pretty speckling to his beautiful blues! </div>

I REALLY thought I could do it and keep up my posting every night but life happened and here I am getting caught up on 5 days of blogging for DS awareness. One of the reasons is because the kids are each doing their thing this season and keeping busy with their activities. Fortunately scheduling has generally been working and we enjoy watching them in participate in things they love to do. It has always been important for us to find things for the kids to do that would keep them active but what they would also enjoy doing. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Colin has been participating in Karate since around this time 5 years ago. It has been activity that has really good for him in so many ways including building his self confidence, making him stronger, improving his focus and attention and being able to defend himself. He is currently a purple belt and while things are getting more technical as time goes by, he is still working hard and making progress in the right direction. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jorkoERyGO8/XafFGuishfI/AAAAAAAATeQ/_O3jU_kD3f03nIGl8SqP3-fRj_isf7mdgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_4060.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jorkoERyGO8/XafFGuishfI/AAAAAAAATeQ/_O3jU_kD3f03nIGl8SqP3-fRj_isf7mdgCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG_4060.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This season he started a new activity which is participating in a Challenger flag football league. This league brings students with disabilities and high school football students together on the football field each week. Colin is really enjoying himself while learning a new sport and there are lots of great moments of kids playing together and having fun! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u7-yIRzCjM0/XafGCJUFdJI/AAAAAAAATec/ivlenxBw9MUGB2be05ME6yy5mh32fbYUwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_4643.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u7-yIRzCjM0/XafGCJUFdJI/AAAAAAAATec/ivlenxBw9MUGB2be05ME6yy5mh32fbYUwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG_4643.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Kailey also continues to participate in Karate and has been doing so for the past 3 years. She is currently a half blue belt and we love watching her transform into a strong and confident little girl in all areas of her life. There are so many benefits to her participation and we have seen so many positive changes over the past 3 years. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aXeRJ8iKXsc/XafGxo58dKI/AAAAAAAATek/uNE1D7Bwe38ICQN60zCnV3tJR3PPj6_sQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_4699.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aXeRJ8iKXsc/XafGxo58dKI/AAAAAAAATek/uNE1D7Bwe38ICQN60zCnV3tJR3PPj6_sQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG_4699.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Kailey is also a member of a travel soccer team and they have been playing together since last season. There was a big learning curve for all involved, but this season has been really fun to watch as their improvements are happening right in front of us. In the beginning, Kailey seemed very hesitant and afraid and now she is tough and aggressive and we love watching her play! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Cody is participating in an activity he chose which is fall baseball. He absolutely loves playing and is so excited for each game each week. We have noticed some changes in him also because he has gone from being very silly in all of the down time, to taking things much more seriously. He always has a huge smile on his face while he is playing! </div>

Just like any other set of siblings, our kids have the best of days together as well as the worst of days when they just can't get along. In the grand scheme of life, they truly are friends and I have enjoyed watching their relationships grow and change throughout the years. I think most new parents of a child with a disability worry and stress over what life will be like for the siblings (and we were no different) but I truly believe that Colin having Down Syndrome is making my children better people for this world. Because of Colin they are learning to communicate in different ways with others, have empathy, be patient and understanding, more inclusive of all people, more helpful, and so many other things. Most especially, they are learning how to support Colin (and each other) in ways that they each need love and support. They say and do things daily that surprise me like these few examples. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
- Over the summer at the Special Olympics Summer Games, Cody enjoyed hanging out with one of Colin's teammates who cannot communicate with words, but rather, inflection of sounds and hand gestures. He's an older athlete and he's always making sure everyone is where they should be/when. He was trying to say something to me this summer and I wasn't really sure what that was and Cody turned to me and said "Duh Mom, he said...." and then explained to me what it was he was saying. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
- On the first day of football practice this season, Colin said hi to a teammate but she didn't respond. Her dad explained that she is deaf and showed Colin how to say hi to her (bend down to her eye level and wave so that she can see him) which he then did. He continued to do this every time he would see her. One day, Chris was at a practice or game and said hi to her (without waving). Colin immediately spoke up to him and said "Daadd! She's deaf! You need to do this (and bent down to her level and waved - she waved back) so that she knows you are talking to her!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
- Kailey says things almost daily because she is probably the MOST aware. Colin's teacher told us that she noticed Colin crying on the playground the other day (this is a whole separate post in itself) and she went up to the teacher to ask/let them know. She was worried and wanted to make sure they knew. She is also incredibly helpful to Colin and will often step in to help him with things before Chris and I are even able. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IxfylECXuKA/XaEf4bNm6zI/AAAAAAAATeE/8ChoGIYbE2wJKtep9wQ63OhcJiw_3Y6jwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_3996.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IxfylECXuKA/XaEf4bNm6zI/AAAAAAAATeE/8ChoGIYbE2wJKtep9wQ63OhcJiw_3Y6jwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG_3996.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I don't think that I could have predicted at the time of Colin's birth, when I unnecessarily worried about how my other kids would be affected, what the outcome would be on our children. The outcome is better siblings, better children, better friends and one day, better people. I am so thankful for that.</div>

Colin has been working really hard on his handwriting for a long time. For the most part, his handwriting has been pretty intelligible and only starts to slacken some when he's tired. He's always been pretty interested in writing but it seems like he's had a big surge lately of really wanting to practice writing. This has actually been serving two purposes; he's practicing writing, but also practicing copying sentences which is a skill he is also working really hard on (forming his own sentences). The way he does this is by copying his Dog Man books onto random pieces of paper or into composition notebooks that he has. Most often, he can be found either reading or copying! He can not be interrupted either! </div>

</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Last spring after a routine cleaning, the dentist recommended we take Colin to an orthodontist out of concern for a terrible underbite he had. Colin's teeth started falling out late and are VERY late to grow in the adult teeth so we were aware that this was probably going to be an issue. He recommended a specific orthodontist that he thought would be a great fit for Colin and so off we went. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3UPXDmz3u0M/XZ08XzMDRdI/AAAAAAAATcw/rHLZtHgJG00VpKYmbGR8YcttJzL4CTb6ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_9679.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3UPXDmz3u0M/XZ08XzMDRdI/AAAAAAAATcw/rHLZtHgJG00VpKYmbGR8YcttJzL4CTb6ACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG_9679.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At the initial visit, Colin handled all of the imaging and evaluations like a pro, but there was very little that actually went into his mouth at that time. He recommended that Colin get braces on the top row of teeth as soon as possible because the underbite was damaging to the adult top tooth that had already grown in (the bottom teeth were biting into the top adult tooth every time he chewed). We decided on a date over spring break and showed up for the appointment to get his braces on. Colin started off really well but in order to get the braces on, he needed some gauze in his mouth, the usage of equipment, etc. and I think he started to get really overwhelmed at all that was happening at the same time. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

We were all worried and after some thought, the doctor and his wife asked if we would be ok to come back at the end of the day when the office was closing; there would be only staff left and they would give Colin the time that he needed to process everything. We left and started talking about it as much as we could and practicing with whatever we could find that resembled tools like the doctor's tools. We were even practicing at the beach! </span></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We showed back up to the appointment at the end of the day armed with a movie on my phone and what we hoped would be sufficient practice for the actual appointment. I think there were many factors that contributed to the success of that visit; a quiet office, a VERY patient doctor and assistant, Mama Mia streaming on my phone, supportive siblings, and a doctor that modified when possible and worked as fast as humanly possible. </div>

The braces were put on successfully and Colin was proud of himself. However, the days that followed were really tough as he got a HUUUUGGE blister on the inside of one of his cheeks (and would NOT put any wax or medication in his mouth) and he swelled up. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
He was miserable and acted similar to being sick. We felt TERRIBLE and it was made worse because there was nothing we could do to make him feel better. We FINALLY got him to do some basic salt water rinses and the things started to turn around. Once we got past the initial swelling, things started to improve and then it was almost like he didn't have them at all. He's been really great about brushing and doing rinses (he does one specifically for braces at night and then just Listerine in the morning) and after many follow up visits, his tooth is where it needs to be. What we are working on now is making space for other adult teeth to come down (which are taking a REALLY long time to do so). We know that this is a "temporary" set to fix some issues and then a full set will come later once all of the teeth are in. We are SO incredibly lucky to have found such a patient, accommodating, and awesome doctor! </div>

I think that one of the most frustrating challenges we face with Colin is noncompliance. It is certainly not like what it used to be because at this age, Colin understands exactly what he is doing in response to an undesired task or just decides that he doesn't want to follow a direction. At any given time, he will intentionally take his time when he knows you are rushing him, will ignore you or pretend like he doesn't hear you or is just plain stubborn. We have some strategies that we use in any given situation and most of the time I can rationalize why he might be doing what he's doing, but it doesn't make it any easier when it's just frustrating. I think what makes it most frustrating is that these behaviors are not consistent and they often crop up after a period of things going pretty well (like today). I snapped a few pictures today as examples. First, we were rushing to squeeze in an errand before Cody's baseball game and I had calmly asked Colin several times to get in the car. He was not ready, so he continued to swing in the tree. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FmjY1BC6ess/XZvfog52nII/AAAAAAAATcU/tq11a7iGo3kZVA2Lr_NxOhXV-GG0V4HdQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_4583.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FmjY1BC6ess/XZvfog52nII/AAAAAAAATcU/tq11a7iGo3kZVA2Lr_NxOhXV-GG0V4HdQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG_4583.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Then, when we were in Target, he kept stopping at random displays and although I would ask him to move it along he would look right at me and continue looking at what he wanted to at his own pace. Sometimes simple strategies like placing my hand on his shoulder, trying to take his hand, or directing his attention works, but not always.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5or4g4mxYJw/XZvfofezPNI/AAAAAAAATcQ/NB81w2Z70isqNEMKFpy0pzmYJY80U_6OQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_4584.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5or4g4mxYJw/XZvfofezPNI/AAAAAAAATcQ/NB81w2Z70isqNEMKFpy0pzmYJY80U_6OQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG_4584.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
One of the ways I show Colin that I am not happy with his not listening is by giving him this "look". Every time I do it, he asks me to stop because he "doesn't like it". He asks me to "make the lines on my head go away". I happened to catch part of my conversation with him about it. In the second video he was being a little bit more silly.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Even at some of the most frustrating moments, he still finds a way to make me laugh! </div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
When we were at the Ear Nose and Throat doctor's office in late summer for a follow up visit, we were all amazed at the fact that Colin has been going there for 10 years. For the most part, we've been really lucky but this is probably the one area that he's needed the most attention medically. As a baby and toddler, Colin never had ear infections but by the time he was 6, he needed to have his tonsils and adenoids out because his sleep was terrible and it was determined that was a result of his tonsils being too big for his airway. When he would lay flat, his tonsils would cover most of his airway and then it was difficult for his body to get the oxygen he needed when sleeping. After awhile later around 7, one of his ears was not testing well and it was determined that he had fluid that was starting to solidify and so that was cleared out and a tube was put in just in his left ear. The tube lasted for just over it's liftetime (3.5 years) and came out at the start of this summer. He made it through the whole rest of the summer without any issues so the doctor feels that as he's aged and his body is physically maturing, that he should be good without having a tube any longer. Let's hope for continued success! </div>

There are so many different things I want to talk about this month but I couldn't decide on what order I wanted to tackle them. My organized brain thought there should be some kind of theme but then my exhausted self said to just do the first thing that came to mind. There are so many awesome things that Colin is doing right now that I can't wait to talk about this month, but unfortunately, the first thing that comes to mind is the most developmentally appropriate issue we are dealing with right now...Colin's attitude. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D6bCjqPjJCI/XZf8aaOvbVI/AAAAAAAATbs/sBrMO4XvORcMwwj9QWYWsDMolsiIH5JtwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_4547.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D6bCjqPjJCI/XZf8aaOvbVI/AAAAAAAATbs/sBrMO4XvORcMwwj9QWYWsDMolsiIH5JtwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG_4547.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Throughout most of last school year, Colin was probably our "easiest" child (relatively speaking) because he was always the most compliant. He was given directions and he followed through. School was going great, socially he was doing great, etc. When summer came along, the feeling that came over me was "whoa, when did we get to the tween phase?". One of my friends makes me laugh all of the time because when I'm venting over certain things she always says to me "didn't you raise him to be like this? Didn't you raise him to be as much like his peers as he can be?". Soooo, here we are, in the tween phase. What defines this phase do you ask? Well, it's the attitude, the disgust for certain things Mom and Dad ask of him, the talking back, frustration when things don't go his way, wanting things when he wants them, rolling his eyes, etc. Chris and I often have a really hard time containing our giggles/laughter when some of these things happen because they ARE so typical but also, sometimes it's a little harder to go through typical phases with Colin because of how we have to approach our response to them. Homework has always been a relatively smooth time period of our day, but lately, Colin gets so frustrated if it's not exactly how he wants it to be. I happened to snap some quick videos of Colin during homework the other day. Please note, eye rolling and responses to things I'm saying. But also, how can you not laugh? </div>

The last of this part of the series is Cody! He is our youngest, and also deemed our "wild child". Chris and I laugh to ourselves all of the time when we look at our kids and the progression of how things changed for us from oldest to youngest. We truly thought that Colin was going to be our hardest child out of any of the kids we had, of COURSE, because he had Down Syndrome. There certainly have been challenges along the way because of that but we will tell you to this day that without a doubt, Cody has been our most difficult child to parent. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7aTDpEgpca8/XZa19pylOsI/AAAAAAAATbg/lSqezMUyvVogWgEYY6ezjp8YoXL0uKJJQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/DSC_1096.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7aTDpEgpca8/XZa19pylOsI/AAAAAAAATbg/lSqezMUyvVogWgEYY6ezjp8YoXL0uKJJQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/DSC_1096.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Cody is filled with so much energy and he is our most adventurous child. He is willing to try so many different things and isn't scared to do so. When you look at his body, he is covered in so many different cuts, scrapes and bruises because he is just so active and always so willing to do things as fast or as hard as he can. He has<i> always</i> tried so hard to keep up with Kailey and Colin that I think it is where so many of the challenges we faced stems from. I can remember him sitting in a high chair at such a young age (6 - 9 month range) and just reaching across and grabbing food off the closest plate. He has always wanted to do what everyone else is doing and tries very hard to do so. He loves to learn and share what he is learning with all of us. He is kind and loving and fiercely determined. We love watching how much he has been growing and changing lately, especially since starting Kindergarten. He has learned so much from being Colin's brother and we get so excited to see how he uses that in so many different ways. He is one special little boy! </div>

I know that this month is called Down Syndrome Awareness month, but Down Syndrome is really just one small piece to our family's puzzle. Each of our three children bring their own specialness to this world and so talking about Kailey and Cody this month is just as important. In fact, while they are not the children WITH Down Syndrome, in some ways, it does play a role in who they are becoming as well. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5sfpJWld-HA/XZVJ7Yc4OnI/AAAAAAAATbU/g6g2KH3eBxQAZCBh00O9rPCL9xV6Tt4agCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_4183.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5sfpJWld-HA/XZVJ7Yc4OnI/AAAAAAAATbU/g6g2KH3eBxQAZCBh00O9rPCL9xV6Tt4agCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG_4183.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Kailey is our "oldest" middle child and I say that because she has many personality traits similar to that of an oldest child in birth order. She is incredibly helpful, she likes to take the lead/take charge (which at times can also be deemed "bossy"), and she watches out for others, especially Colin and Cody. At 8.5 years old, she is very "aware" of things that happen around her. She is very sensitive and at times, emotional, but she does a good job at pulling herself together. She likes to please adults whether that is Chris and I, her teachers, coaches, etc. and she cares very much what they think. She works hard to make sure she is doing things the right way. She has become very athletic and currently takes Karate classes two times a week (she is a half blue belt), plays on a travel soccer team, and also plays basketball and softball. She enjoys reading and is very artistic (which definitely doesn't come from Chris or me!). We love what Kailey being the only daughter adds to our family! </div>

Over the past 10 years of blogging, I have spent a LOT of time sharing so much related to Colin's development, hitting milestones, successes, challenges, etc. The very first time I hit "publish" on a blog post, my thought process was that it was going to be a place I needed to vent, but I very quickly realized that Colin was a very determined little boy and there was so many reasons for celebration. The blog turned into just that; a place to celebrate and at times, a space that allowed me to work through some of the emotions that Chris and I were working through. His diagnosis of Down Syndrome at birth came as a complete shock to both of us and I know the feelings that we felt that day, and for weeks following, were feelings of grief that we will never forget. What we thought would be the hardest thing we'd ever go through turned into the<b><i> greatest</i></b> blessing we never realized we were missing. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b></b><i></i><b></b><i></i><br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q-u9tdRK1o8/XZQA738OJTI/AAAAAAAATa8/m1jVrT-qhYEfe8uhVFdzK-Wg2uClB7h_QCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/DSC_1092.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q-u9tdRK1o8/XZQA738OJTI/AAAAAAAATa8/m1jVrT-qhYEfe8uhVFdzK-Wg2uClB7h_QCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/DSC_1092.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Colin is just about 10.5 years old and he has such an incredible personality. He's really funny and witty and loves to make others laugh. He has ONE joke he loves to tell over and over right now that's a knock knock joke asking why the chicken likes to cross the road. The punch line is so old right now (to get to Chick-Fil-A of course!) we have a hard time laughing, but he still cracks himself up every time. He has always been and continues to be so observant and arguably, a significant skill of his that allows him to learn so much. Along with that comes determination to accomplish anything he decides he wants to accomplish. With patience and time, he continuously observes whatever it is (watching others, carefully practicing, etc.) until he feels comfortable enough to try it/practice it on his own. He's strong and lean and we've been amazed lately at how his body is shaping and becoming quite muscular! A lot of this is because he loves to participate in sports and play, he keeps practicing/trying different exercises (more on that in another post) and is very active. He still loves music, acting, being the center of attention to "perform" and is determined to have a job at Sesame Place one day in the parade. He's sensitive to others' emotions (particularly our family) and wants to comfort us if he's aware that we're not feeling the best. He's often seen putting his arm around others, sneaking kisses to the cheek, giving hugs, etc (mostly family again). He loves his school community; his teachers and his friends that he's made. </div>

Today, October 1st, marks the beginning of Down Syndrome Awareness Month and it is a time dedicated to education and awareness about all things related to Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome). For many years, I would participate in a challenge sponsored by another blogger to blog for all 31 days of October but as time has gone by, it has gotten more difficult for me. I am hanging on to this blog for many personal/emotional reasons but finding the time to sit down and share the way I used to has become increasingly more challenging. Each year of the past 10 of raising Colin have all brought different challenges and achievement of milestones and this year is no different. My goal is to spend this month highlighting some of those, but also, ones related to raising three very different and unique children. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
School was back in session for all of us on September 5th and while it was hard to say goodbye to summer, we were all ready to transition back to a time of regular routines and schedules. We mapped out a plan on a white board so everyone knew what they needed to accomplish on the first day before heading to the bus stop. We continue to use that daily to help all of us with what is on our agenda for the day ahead. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
What made the start of this school year especially exciting for everyone was the fact that Cody was going to be attending the same school as Colin and Kailey. He was so excited to join them (although also quite nervous) and he was ready to get up and get going on the first morning before school. This year, I went out at 10pm the night before to make the chalk drawing in the driveway to save on time in the morning. It's funny because the chalk drawing started one year because I didn't have any signs for the kids to hold and I liked it so much that I continue with it each year. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wpXVLAaUDew/XYA4_YRvePI/AAAAAAAATZg/dpC_6qfq2XQAxAv0N6Nn6_qtFA_B3RZAQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/DSC_1092.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wpXVLAaUDew/XYA4_YRvePI/AAAAAAAATZg/dpC_6qfq2XQAxAv0N6Nn6_qtFA_B3RZAQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/DSC_1092.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Overall, the transition for everyone has gone pretty smoothly, but they all handle the exhaustion that comes with the new schedule very differently. Colin was thrilled to head back to school knowing that he would see his friends but also because he would have the same paraprofessional and special education teacher again in addition to his new general education 4th grade teacher. He was SO excited that he came to my bedside fully dressed and ready for school...only, it was 1:00am. He was so adamant that he was ready that I couldn't get him back into his pajamas and he slept the rest of the night in his school clothes. As we start the 2nd full week of school, he wakes up each morning ready to go, follows his checklist (better than the other two), and happily anticipates the start of the day (especially when he knows what he has in front of him). Some of the more challenging things we face with Colin currently have to do with some new behaviors that have started to pop up as he starts to transition into that "tween" phase. There is some talking back, easily getting frustrated when things don't go his way, and some physical behaviors (primarily amongst siblings - he certainly isn't the only one). It seems to (thankfully) be a mostly "at home" issue but I am trying to talk to him about strategies he should be utilizing more so than some of the ones he is choosing. I see that some of the behaviors are more enhanced after school when the exhaustion starts to set in; it seems the exhaustion makes him more irritable. I am hoping that as September progresses on, these things will start to "die down" a bit. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Kailey was also very excited and ready to start school. She was happy to start the year with a new teacher and generally has transitioned incredibly well to the start of the year. While she is also tired and exhausted at the end of the day, especially with her activities schedule, she handles it a lot better behaviorally than Colin and Cody. The biggest challenge we face with her is just a general lack of paying attention/following directions. She can become "spacey" and will immediately forget a task asked of her moments after being asked because she is not totally focused on us. She is the busiest with Karate two nights a week and soccer three days a week (one of them being a weekend game day) but is really enjoying being involved in those activities. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JChY47Aak0M/XYA72CDEW5I/AAAAAAAATZ4/tzIy9pe11qkCNIj3wL6jORjsp7oEXuu1wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/DSC_1096.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JChY47Aak0M/XYA72CDEW5I/AAAAAAAATZ4/tzIy9pe11qkCNIj3wL6jORjsp7oEXuu1wCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/DSC_1096.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Cody is such a big boy now that he just turned 5 and is in Kindergarten. He loves his teachers (he has a co-taught class with a general education teacher, special education teacher and paraprofessional) and is constantly telling us about different classmates that are his friends. He is excited to tell us about all of the things he is learning and all of the teachers that are "looking out for him" that know Colin and Kailey. The first progress we received noted some minor behaviors that we need to work on with him, but overall it was very positive. On the surface he is transitioning pretty smoothly but he is so tired at the end of the day and that is when we see the most challenging behaviors. He can easily be set off into being upset if something does not go his way and it's hard to get him to transition to some of the activities he needs to attend for Colin and Kailey. I know this transition period can take several weeks, but I do hope we start to see a bigger change for the positive soon. The plus side though is we very rarely see visits from him after bedtime! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PIKW5QjJuw4/XYA83RZ0M8I/AAAAAAAATaE/Q4wKCueaTXMeoywcm9-daCplgBcmPnV9gCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_4020.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PIKW5QjJuw4/XYA83RZ0M8I/AAAAAAAATaE/Q4wKCueaTXMeoywcm9-daCplgBcmPnV9gCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG_4020.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As with any change in routines, it is always an adjustment and we are trying to work through it together as much as we can. There is a lot to manage with both of us working full time, getting the kids to all of their activities (sometimes multiple on the same day; thank goodness for helpful friends and family!), making sure the house doesn't full apart, everyone is fed WHILE eating together at dinner, and getting to bed at a normal time with each getting time to read. I often feel like I am running from one task to another to stay on the "schedule" (it can be a flaw of my personality) but we're getting there the more "normal" this all becomes. </div>

It's so hard to believe that our little boy is turning 5 today! It feels like just yesterday we were anxiously awaiting his arrival (which came 10 days late) and welcoming him into our lives. As the years have gone by, he has become such a loving, determined, spunky, playful, full of life, fun-loving special guy and we are so thankful he is a part of all of our lives. The toddler years were difficult because he has always desperately tried to keep up with Colin and Kailey and has gotten very frustrated when he is unable to do things the same way they do. But this determination is also what makes him willing to try anything and is not afraid to do so either. We are still going through a new transition period as he just started Kindergarten last week, but we are so happy that he is loving school, his teacher, and making new friends on this journey. We are so proud of him and greatly enjoy watching him grow. Happy 5th birthday, Cody! We all love you so very much! </div>

Last weekend brought with it the official end of summer as we transitioned into a new school year. This year was particularly bittersweet for me because although we were ready to have structure and routine back in our life, we were not quite ready to let go of the amazing summer we had this year. Our summer was filled with lots of adventures with family and friends, plenty of sun and our favorite place, the beach. I am grateful for the memories we made together as a family and greatly appreciated the time we spent together. It is always hard to say goodbye to summer! </div>

The end of this school year also brought a very big change for all of us as Cody finished pre-K at Good Hands Childcare Center, a place we came to love very much. Cody's end of the school year came in two parts which included the end of the year show and his very last day of school. Both of these events left us feeling very emotional for lots of reasons but primarily because it was evident that our little boy was also transitioning from toddler into "big boy" status. It has been no secret that Cody can be our difficult one but although things are not always easy, he has changed a lot over the course of the last year in so many positive ways. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I think what has always been so difficult with him is that since he was a baby, he has been desperately trying to keep up with Colin and Kailey. Because of that we saw him accomplish skills this year like teach himself to ride a bike without training wheels, he's been fiercely independent, and he wants to do things his way. In the beginning of the year, he was much more likely to handle things that didn't go his way with crying and/or tantrums and although we still see that at times, it had vastly improved by the end of the year. We have been questioned at times at why we are sending him to Kindergarten when he won't turn 5 until mid-September and the reason why is because we absolutely KNOW he is ready. Although he will be a young Kindergartener, we know (based on experience) what readiness skills are needed and Cody definitely has those (again, due to his personality in trying to keep up with the others). We also know this because we are grateful that Cody had a very special pre-K teacher that helped him to prepare for this upcoming transition. </div>

A few days after the show was Cody's last day of school, but also, our family's last day at the school. This was emotional for me because we started Good Hands after having already been at a daycare we loved and after we had a rough experience with Colin in a place he attended for a very short period. When we first met with the owner of the school, I remember asking about having a student with needs like Colin's and there was no hesitation in her voice when she said she would be happy to have him. We have cared for all of the teachers that have had all of our children because of how much they loved and supported them. Choosing a daycare facility can be a very difficult process because you want to find a place that will care for your children in the same ways you would if you could have them at home with you. We have trusted the women who have cared for the kids with our whole hearts and we know that they all had a significant impact on the development of our kids as they transitioned from babies to toddlers and then to children. Saying goodbye was difficult and there were LOTS of tears shed on our end but I am so grateful for all they did and for our wonderful experiences while we were there. </div>

Cody has had the hardest time because although he is excited at being a big boy and going to Kindergarten, I think he's nervous about leaving a place he has been comfortable at and the only place he has known (he started when he was 4 months old!). I know he will be fine once the time comes to get on the bus with his brother and sister but just like anyone, the anticipation can be difficult! </div>

I have been seriously negligent in keeping this blog up to date and I was reminded of how important it was to me recently when I had the opportunity to meet up with some friends I met through the blog 10 years ago. With the rise in the use of social media (especially for me), it has become easier to put up a quick post on a day to day basis then to sit down and put thought behind the things that I feel and want to say. If I look back even a few years ago, I was posting on an almost daily basis about the things that were happening. In the beginning, the blog was a designated to share specifically about Colin having Down Syndrome but as time went by, it was such a part of our normal life that it was actually almost hard to find things to talk about related to that. The posts have become so few and far between and I need to, if only for myself, get back in the wagon to continue to document our journey. </div>

The end of this school year saw Colin finishing up 3rd grade, Kailey finishing 2nd grade and Cody (which will be in Part II), finishing up pre-k. We were so fortunate because it was another great year for both of them and their teachers played such an integral role in the progress and successes they had throughout the school year. </div>

It's always so amazing to me to look at the beginning and end of school year photos to see how much the kids have changed physically, but then to recognize all of the other ways in which they have grown and matured as well. We were so incredibly grateful for Colin's team this year, comprised of a general education teacher (Kailey had her in Kindergarten), a special education teacher we hadn't had before (A-MAZING), his paraprofessional he has had for 4 years now, a physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist (all therapists that have been with him for 5 years), case manager, various specials teachers, and a principal who continues to support him in so many ways. In school, Colin has classmates that recognize his differences but support and love him for who he is and allow him to feel safe and happy. We saw academic growth in many areas but continue to push through the most challenging areas to find ways that will allow him to make growth. His behavior has been "typical"; this year brought us some new things to work through which has primarily been the transition to "pre-teen". At times it was funny to laugh at (without him noticing) the things he would say when "talking back" but also frustrating because although they are "developmentally appropriate", handling them often times takes different/repetitive approaches. He remained involved in various different sports activities throughout the school year both with his typical peers and in communities with other athletes with special needs. Overall, he had a really great year and we are grateful for that! </div>

I am really proud of Kailey and how much she has grown and matured this year. She had a teacher we all adored (she was Colin's 2nd grade teacher last year) and Kailey so much so that she cried when the year ended because she was going to miss her so much. She did really well academically and in all honesty, we don't have to worry so much about that with her. She cares about doing well but appropriately so. We are grateful because she has a nice group of friends that she enjoys to spend time with. This year we saw a lot of changes in her because of our discussions related to Colin having Down Syndrome, which in turn, led to a lot of talks about differences and disability. We saw so many wonderful things out of her because of this new understanding and many instances of her being kind. What I love about our school community is that even though it's small, and Kailey is only a grade behind Colin, she has her own experiences, is her own person, and loves her school and where she is. This year, she has increased her involvement in different sports activities. She joined a travel soccer team and made a lot of growth playing defense (sometimes goalie!), she continued with her quest for black belt in Karate, completed a basketball clinic, and tried softball for the first time. She is becoming an athlete and I love that about her. At times she is still shy and bashful but I hope to see this change as her confidence continues to grow. </div>

While we are so proud of both Colin and Kailey for all they have been able to accomplish this year, we know they are able to have the successes they do because they feel safe, supported and loved in their school community. I can't say enough how much I love their school and how thankful I am for that. It's been an awesome 2018-2019 school year! </div>
