Walking

Chris and I want Colin to walk so badly so that every little thing he does that shows he is taking a "step" in the right direction makes us super excited. Yesterday during the transition meeting, it came up that Colin still isn't independent walking yet despite the fact that we explained that he is walking with minimal assistance. Someone brought up in the meeting about whether or not we would need to get him special equipment (whether it be "medical" equipment or simply a stroller) so that he could get around at school if he still wasn't walking by the time he started. Oh the look I must have had on my face! I quickly started saying that if someone would just hold his hand, he would walk! I do NOT want that option even surfacing again! As Chris and I said, we don't need him becoming comfortable getting pushed around everywhere he goes!

Anyway, Colin must have had a birdie in his ear because he had physical therapy today and she did a lot of work with one handed walking which he really hasn't done much of lately, or at all. Since that session, I have been able to walk a few short paces only holding on to one hand and he seems much more confident than he did before. We are getting so much closer and I just can't wait!!

Aw, he does so good with just holding on to the one hand! He's not going to need any special equipment, he will be walking soon!

Goog gracious he and B are sooo much alike!! Why walk when I can crawl super fast mom? Right there with ya! Lately B pretty much screams the entire PT session but the guy is getting him to take independent steps but B is totally pissed about it-lol! Colin will be walking by the time he transitions, stick to your guns-no stroller!

I have a feeling you are going to have an early Christmas present from Colin with him walking!

Oh, he is sooooo right. there!!! I agree with you 100% about not allowing him to get comfortable with an option other than walking. I know plenty of children who go into preschool without walking at all - Colin's well ahead of that, since he'll walk with minimal assistance.

Not sure if your PT is doing it or not, but one thing that got Samantha to walk independently was having something held in each hand. Like balls, or blocks. For some reason it kept her focused as she walked across the room on her own.

Nice going, Colin! Our little guy is at exactly the same point- can walk well with 2 hands, and will take a few steps one-handed (if he's in the mood). We are so anxious to get him going, like you- it's hard when he's soooo close! I just ordered some Walking Wings, so we'll see how that goes. Also, our PT just recommended switching to wearing the Sure Steps only part-time (not sure if Colin has orthotics). Good Luck!

That is great!!!! (Not about what the school said...boo to that completely!) He is probably like Sweet Pea and will only do things when he is certain that he can. And he will! Keep up the good work!

Oh, and you have probably already tried this, but...when we first started with independent steps it was between me and grandma...back and forth and it was more of a diving toward the person after one or two steps, but it worked.
