This meeting seemed like a huge setback, but Colin will shine like he does in every venue once his team believes in his right to be there. This sounds just like Kayla's 3rd grade year ... I think we had 6 IEP mtgs. We thought the same thing - open communication/dialogue, give them resources and support to show how inclusion is done and we could make this happen. It is so much harder to be the catalyst for change when everyone is not on the same board. And change for an inclusive environment needs to come from the top down. I wish I had some great words of wisdom or advice, but even after having gone through this I don't. You do all you can, but trying to be the first to do something can be like banging your head against the wall over and over. We are in 5th grade now and things have somewhat improved I know the last few years could've been so much better. She's not in a self-contained room, but she does go to the resource room for math and ELA. That's where I feel like there could be improvement - they still haven't figured out how to modify curriculum for her stay w/her peers in the gen ed room for math/ELA. It's frustrating. I just wanted to commiserate with you and let you know that even though you aren't alone...even though I know that doesn't help in the IEP mtgs!Michellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02441176684416139172noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3124741384965975431.post-53723983963935805162015-02-18T10:24:33.754-05:002015-02-18T10:24:33.754-05:00Where does this go now? Including him in things in which he can be successful such as; music, art, pe, literacy (?); and providing extra out-of-classroom support for areas in which he struggles more may be better for him.
You don't need to blaze the trail for future parents/children. Down Syndrome doesn't indicate that individuals are at the same level of functioning, and it is okay if Colin functions on a lower level than other individuals with DS.

You're not letting Colin or anyone else down if you place him with partial inclusion.

I just hope you remember that where he is at developmentally is okay, and his needs educationally may change and then change back again. You can adjust his school settings based on where he is at at that moment, and it's not defeat.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
